Vintage collar box leather Men Women travelling case Art Deco horse shoe shape
Vintage leather collar box (empty), probably made in the Art Deco period (1920s or 1930s).
This type of box was used by both men and women when travelling, to keep their starched shirt collars in. Starched collars were worn by gentlemen (for evening and day wear), by officers in the armed forces, and of course by other professional people such as nurses, lawyers, teachers, nannies, and bank managers.
This is a good quality leather box, horse-shoe shaped. It still has its leather-covered buckle, but unfortunately the strap has snapped in two. The box has clearly been used quite a lot over the years, and is no longer very smart, but it is quite serviceable.
You could use the box as it is, but if you prefer your vintage items to look smart, you will probably wish to do some minor restoration work - especially the back corner of the rim, and replacing the strap.
Please look at the pictures to get a good idea of the condition of this box.
Note: I have shown the box with one collar inside, just to give an idea of how big it is - this collar is NOT included with the item.
Fairly good condition, but this is a vintage item, probably over half a century old, and it does NOT look brand new. The leather is a nice colour, but there are scuffs, particularly at the edges, and some surface marks. The box has kept its shape well, and there is no major damage. The stitches holding the rim of the lid together have worn away at one of the back corners, leaving the rim a bit loose, and this has led to wear on the lower edge of the rim. A minor repair to the back corner should stop this becoming any worse. The inner drum is in good condition, and the lid is well padded. Some of the stitching of the lid has worn away. The strap is broken, and part of it is missing. You will probably wish to have the strap replaced. The leather-covered buckle is in good condition. The box does shut without the strap - so it would not really matter if you are using the box at home. But for travelling, the strap is needed to make sure the box doesn't come open.
